ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The polls are closed in New Mexico, where voters are deciding two closely watched races Tuesday. Who will succeed Democratic Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham? And who will represent the state’s 2nd Congressional District in the US House?
Results are in for Democratic Sen. Ben Ray Luján, who won reelection to the US Senate after defeating Republican Larry Marker, securing a second six-year term. Luján, who was first elected to the Senate in 2020 after serving in the US House, campaigned on lowering costs and expanding access to healthcare.
Voters also elected Democrat Amanda López Askin to be New Mexico’s next secretary of state, according to NBC News. They called the race for López Askin at 10:22 p.m. local time. At the time of publication, she was leading Republican Ramona Goolsby 60% to 40% with 91% of the vote counted.
Democrat Raúl Torrez is projected to win reelection as New Mexico attorney general, according to NBC News, which called the race for Torrez at 10:22 p.m. local time. Torrez leads Republican Samuel Kane 63% to 37% with 91% of the vote counted.
Additional results will be updated as county clerks report their counts. The state will certify the results after the canvassing and election security process.
Who won the New Mexico governor’s race?
Democrat Deb Haaland has won the New Mexico governor’s race, defeating Republican Gregg Hull and putting her on track to succeed term-limited Grisham.
Haaland, a former U.S. interior secretary and congresswoman, will become the nation’s first Native American woman governor.
Haaland emphasized expanding affordable housing and supporting rising healthcare cost remedies like a public option, while Hull focused on reducing crime and controlling state spending.
Who won New Mexico’s 2nd Congressional District race?
Democratic Rep. Gabe Vasquez has defeated Republican Greg Cunningham to retain New Mexico’s 2nd Congressional District seat.
CBS News projected Vasquez’s win around midnight local time, and the New York Times reports the Democrat taking 58.7% of the vote with more than 95% of votes in.
New Mexico’s 2nd Congressional District stretches across much of the southern part of the state, including Las Cruces, Roswell, and Carlsbad. Regarded as New Mexico’s only competitive congressional district, the seat has seen razor-thin margins in recent cycles.
Incumbent Vasquez previously defeated Republican Yvette Herrell in back-to-back elections in 2022 and 2024, making his race against Cunningham his first matchup with a new Republican challenger.
