According to reporting from KTSM 9 News, an elderly woman walked into a convenience store in Chaparral, New Mexico, asking for help after believing she was being followed by people witnesses believed were ICE agents waiting outside.
A person claiming to be her daughter said in a social media comment that the woman has lived legally in the U.S. for more than 35 years and was on her way to a chemotherapy appointment when she was detained. The encounter comes as ICE traffic stops face renewed scrutiny following two fatal agent-involved shootings.
Although ICE reportedly paused many vehicle stops earlier this week, President Trump said Wednesday the tactic should continue. DHS did not respond to KTSM’s request for comment on whether the encounter was part of an ICE enforcement operation.
