Did you know New Mexicans were the first people exposed to radiation from nuclear weapons testing? Tina Cordova, founder of the Tularosa Basin Downwinders Consortium, has been organizing for decades to raise awareness for communities in New Mexico devastated by exposure to nuclear fallout from the 1945 Trinity test site. Tests at Trinity marked the first time a nuclear weapon was detonated. On Aug. 31, Cordova spoke at the United Nations General Assembly in New York to advocate for expanded compensation programs for survivors and the abolition of nuclear weapons in all countries.
